Paint ground textures and place grass, flowers, and stones directly in Godot's 3D editor.

Ground Painter combines a three-layer texture brush with a decorative mesh brush in one editor dock. Use your own static models or start with the included meadow and sample assets.

Paint and shape your scene

  • Blend three ground textures with adjustable brush radius, strength, hardness, and texture tiling.
  • Scatter mesh variants with density, spacing, random scale and rotation, and surface alignment controls.
  • Manage named mesh layers with visibility, placement counts, deletion, and clearing.
  • Adjust texture and mesh-layer hue and saturation with sliders and exact numeric values. Each slider drag creates one undo step.
  • Undo paint strokes, erase decorations, and drag the grip below the layer list to resize it.

Free download, optional donations

Download the complete addon, demo project and guide for free. If Ground Painter helps your project, an optional donation is welcome; the suggested amount is $4.99.

Included downloads

  • Addon package: Ground Painter 1.4 for installation in an existing Godot project.
  • Demo project: an editable meadow, an independent practice ground, and seven sample meshes: two grasses, three flowers, and two stones.
  • Documentation: an illustrated five-page quick-start PDF, installation instructions, and the changelog.

Both packages include the quick-start PDF. Painting happens in the editor; the running demo provides orbit and zoom controls for viewing the scene.

Requirements and scope

Verified with Godot 4.7.1.stable. Other engine versions have not been verified. Install Godot separately.

Ground painting uses a local XZ footprint, three fixed texture layers, and a 512 × 512 coverage mask. Overhangs and vertically stacked surfaces do not receive independent coverage.

Mesh painting creates static decorations without collisions or copied gameplay behavior. Animated and skinned models are not supported. Compatible source-material wind can be retained, but the addon does not create wind or automatically filter scattering by ground texture. Some source materials have limits on color adjustment.

Texture changes save their external resources automatically. Save the scene after preparing a ground or using Make paint unique, and to keep mesh layers and placements. Keep the addon runtime files and referenced assets with painted scenes; saved decorations render through chunked MultiMesh batches.

License

The included license gives authorized free and paid downloads the same commercial and noncommercial project-use permissions, access for project collaborators, and distribution of required runtime components and sample assets within finished games or apps. It excludes standalone addon or asset-pack redistribution and resale. See LICENSE.txt in either download for the complete terms.

Code, documentation and cover graphics were developed with AI assistance. Sample models and textures are generated procedurally; gallery images are original Godot captures.
